Al Hubbs

Al Hubbs, from Indian Head, is a remarkable volunteer whose dedication to hockey spans nearly six decades, impacting the sport at every level—local, provincial, and national. His commitment to hockey began in the 1970s, and over the years, he became a vital force in the development of the game in Saskatchewan.

He has served in multiple roles, including as a coach, referee, and administrator, touching all aspects of the sport. His leadership at Indian Head Minor Hockey, where he held positions as referee-in-chief, vice-president, and president, laid the foundation for his continued involvement over the years.

A true hockey builder at heart, Hubbs volunteered extensively with the Saskatchewan Hockey Association, now Hockey Saskatchewan, serving on its board of directors for 20 years, including nearly a decade as president from 2001-06 and 2009-13. His leadership helped steer the organization during pivotal times, and he played a key role in the formation of the Saskatchewan Development Model (SDM) in 2006. This collaborative model between various leagues marked a significant advancement in player development and partner cooperation.

Hubbs' impact wasn’t confined to the province. He served as a board director with Hockey Canada for six seasons, contributing to the governance and advancement of hockey at the national level. His work included pivotal roles on committees such as the governance committee, human resources committee, and the appeal review. His advocacy for proper governance and organizational structure led to significant changes within Hockey Canada, including a landmark governance review in 2010 that influenced the direction of hockey in the country.

Among Hubbs’ many accolades is the prestigious Hockey Canada Outstanding Volunteer Award, which he received in 2007, recognizing his exceptional service to amateur hockey. He was also awarded the Queen’s Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for his service to the community and the sport.

Besides his many leadership roles, Hubbs remained an active volunteer, serving as the vice-president of discipline for the Saskatchewan Male Under-18 AAA Hockey League and chair of the discipline committee for the Moose Jaw Minor Hockey Association.

His legacy is one of unwavering advocacy for hockey, volunteerism, and mentorship, as he continues to encourage others to become involved and serve the game. Hubbs' induction is a testament to his lifelong commitment to the development, governance, and sustainability of hockey in Saskatchewan and beyond.
