1984-85 Moose Jaw Generals

The 1984-85 Moose Jaw Generals are one of Saskatchewan’s most celebrated senior teams, achieving historic success that remains unmatched in the province’s hockey history. Based in Canada’s Most Notorious City, the Generals unrelenting work ethic guided them to capture the ultimate prize in Canadian senior AA men’s hockey, the William George Hardy Trophy.

The Generals’ journey began in the South Central Senior Hockey League. Under the direction of head coach Jim Hrycuik, the Moose Jaw squad completed the regular season with an unblemished 24-0 record. Forward Jim Misener led the league in scoring, Kevin Moore was recognized as the league’s top defenceman, Kevin Evans earned top goalie honours for the second straight year, and Hrycuik was named the league’s top coach.

In league playoffs, Moose Jaw continued their dominance, sweeping the Weyburn Devils 2-0 in the semi-final before defeating the Milestone Flyers in four straight games to secure the league championship. The Generals then advanced to the provincial playoffs stage, defeating the Regina Bruins in the semi-final and battling the Lloydminster Border Kings in a thrilling best-of-five provincial final. After a 34-game winning streak was broken with a 3-1 loss in the first game, Moose Jaw rallied to win the series 3-2, claiming their second-straight provincial senior AA title.

The Generals advanced to the Edmonton Journal Trophy playoffs, sweeping Manitoba’s Thompson Hawks and the Quesnel Kangaroos of British Columbia to claim the Western Canadian championship. Finally, with Moose Jaw hosting the Hardy Cup finals in 1985, they faced the Eastern Canadian champions, Charlottetown Islanders, and the same team that had denied them the national title the previous season with a 4-1 series win in Prince Edward Island. Led by Hardy Cup MVP Carl Van Camp, the Generals swept the Islanders in four-straight games (5-3, 7-1, 4-2, 11-2) to capture the 1985 championship in front of a home crowd at the Moose Jaw Civic Centre.

The Generals finished their season with an extraordinary 45-2 record and became the only Saskatchewan team to win the Hardy Cup in the competition’s history. Their achievements reflect the strength and passion of senior hockey in Saskatchewan and the talent cultivated within the province. The team’s remarkable season and enduring legacy have also been recognized with their induction into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2015, cementing their place among the province’s greatest team achievements.
